Email is a convenient form of communication. But, sending your medical and other sensitive information via email poses several risks of which you and/or your personal representative should be aware of and consider prior to communicating with us via email:

Email is not a secure form of communication and is unreliable.

  • The privacy and security of email communication cannot be guaranteed.
  • Email is delivery cannot be guaranteed (e.g., it may be deleted by filters, dropped by ISPs, other otherwise not delivered).

Email is not appropriate for all types of communications.

  • E-mail communication is a convenience and not appropriate for emergencies or time-sensitive issues.
  • Highly sensitive or personal information should not be communicated by e-mail (e.g., HIV or other STD status, mental illness, and chemical dependency.)
  • Clinically relevant messages and responses will be documented in the medical record.

Third parties may be able to access email communications.

  • Email can be forwarded, intercepted, printed, read, and stored by others. Email may also be misaddressed.
  • Staff other than the health care provider may read and process e-mail.
  • Employers may have the right to access e-mails received or sent through their network.
  • Online service providers (e.g., your ISP, mail client, etc.) may have a legal right to inspect and keep emails that pass through their system.

Email can introduce viruses into a computer system, and potentially damage or disrupt your computer as well as others on your network.
